C.H. Johnson Consulting was included in Skidmore Owings and Merrill’s team to assist the Convention Center Authority in addressing strategy issues regarding the reuse of the existing Washington, DC convention center site. Our intended role was to determine if the new Convention Center should contemplate future expansion, and if the existing convention center site should be preserved as a site for future expansion. Early discussions among client and consultant representatives concluded that the existing convention center site was not practical for an expansion. Either an adjacent expansion of the new convention center or the Convention Center Authority operating multiple facilities in the market were deemed the most prudent options for subsequent future deliberation.

While commenting on the expansion issue, C.H. Johnson Consulting directed to focus more on formulating options regarding the headquarters hotel. It was determined that a new, large headquarters hotel is a necessary ingredient within Washington DC’s hotel mix. C.H. Johnson Consulting performed a competitive positioning analysis, estimated demand for the hotel, evaluated site locations, and presented an operating subsidies analysis.
