Johnson Consulting, Inc. was retained by the City of Seattle to perform an economic and fiscal impact analysis to estimate the potential losses associated with losing the Seattle Supersonics team and how spending, employment and taxes would be affected.
An analysis was completed that took into account 11 major and distinct types of direct spending sources that ranged from ticket revenue to player and fan spending outside the area. The project helped educate City, County and State officials by providing a comprehensive understanding of the effects the team has on fans and local businesses as well as the estimated tax revenue generated by games, marketing and merchandise. In addition, intangible impacts were researched from a philanthropic, media coverage/city image, and the intrinsic value of being an NBA City. We also analyzed the consequences of the teams’ loss on Key Bank, on Seattle Center, and on several adjoining neighborhoods.
Overall, both tangible and intangible factors helped determine how the Supersonics will impact both the City of Seattle and the State of Washington’s economies.
